Stone Anchor Engineering

National building codes currently do not contain prescriptive requirements for stone anchors. Instead, the codes require dimensional stone panels and associated anchorage systems are analyzed and designed by licensed Professional Engineers.

The engineering process includes computer analysis of each unique shape of stone panel. The analysis provides the engineer with information to determine anchor attachment and locations and to insure internal stone stresses are minimized to prevent cracking of the stone. Typical loading conditions seen by stone cladding including self-weight, wind and seismic loads, as well as thermal expansion and contraction forces. After anchor locations are determined, the resulting reactions are utilized to select a specific type, size, arrangement, and material thickness of each anchor and appropriate anchor fasteners.

Fees for anchor engineering vary by project but are generally determined by the unique number and size of stone panels, the project location, and special requirements that are contained in the architectural specifications. To obtain a quote, copies of the architectural and structural drawings as well as specifications relating to the stone cladding are required.
