# 77: Thermal Pos-I-Tie® Brick Veneer Anchoring System (Patent# 7,415,803)

The THERMAL POS-I-TIE® is a factory assembled four-piece system that features a plastic wing nut, stainless steel barrel,  neoprene washer and screw inserts for steel stud, concrete, CMU, brick and wood backup walls.  For backups with insulation or gypsum board, the post anchor screw penetrates the insulation, screws directly into the backup, while sealing the penetration hole.

PLASTIC WING NUT:

 
  • Wing nut made from a high quality proprietary plastic material which acts as a thermal break, decreasing thermal transfer through insulation.
  • Highly flame resistant with a UL 94 V-0 rating.
  • Very low thermal conductivity, over 100 times less than metals such as steel.
  • Refer to ACI 530 Code Veneer Chapter section 6.2.1. Alternative design of anchored masonry veneer.

  • Very high corrosion resistance.

NEOPRENE WASHER:

     
  • For backups with insulation or gypsum board, the post anchor screw penetrates the insulation, screws directly into the backup.  The wing nut and neoprene washer seal the penetration hole completely preventing mositure from reaching the backup wall.

  • Self-Drilling Screw Inserts available for steel stud backup walls.

Once installed, the Wing Nut™ is hand tightened to seal the factory-installed washer against the insulation.

Stainless Steel Wing Nut Stone Anchor for use with #77 Thermal Wing Nut
Pos-I-Tie®.

The Wing Nut Stone Anchors are notched to fit in the wing holes of the Thermal Wing Nut. The Wing Nut Stone Anchor allows for a vertical adjustability of 1". Maximum gage is 1/8". Minimum overall length is 2". Specify length, width, and bend lengths.

Available in split-bend style ( shown in pictures), straight bend, or pin-type.

Length of the anchor is measured as 1/4" from the face of the insulation to the center of the stone.

Installation of the Wing Nut screw should be within 1/4" below the joint to achieve the best load

Add up the thickness of the sheathing (insulation + gypsum board). This will be the number that falls between the “Adjustable sheathing dimensions - gray shaded” area on the chart. Add in your airspace and make sure the total distance from the backup to the start of the veneer is greater than the overall length of the screw from the backup. If two screws fit the criteria, choose the shorter overall length screw.


Example:
5/8” Dens-glass with 2” insulation and 2” airspace. Sheathing thickness is 2-5/8”. Distance from backup to start of veneer is 4-5/8”. Both the 3-5/8” screw and the 4-1/8” screw fit the criteria. Specify the 3-5/8” long screw.

2.02 Masonry Veneer Anchors and Ties

A. Wing-Nut™ Pos-I-Tie® Anchor Assembly shall consist of:
Co-polymer coated, one-piece carbon steel screw factory assembled to a type 304 stainless steel barrel with a plastic wing nut and a stainless steel metal backed neoprene washer. The anchor overall length to be [2-5/8”] [3-1/8”] [3-5/8”] [4-1/8”] [4-5/8”] [5-1/8"]
[5-5/8"]to suit wall construction composed of [specify sheathing thickness] [specify insulation thickness] [specify airspace].

B. Pintle Wire Tie to be made of 3/16” diameter wire and to have overall length of [3”] [3-1/2”] [4”] [5”] [specify custom tie length]. The wire tie to be [Hot dip Galvanized conforming to ASTM A 153 Class B-2], [Mill Galvanized conforming to ASTM A 641], [made of Stainless Steel conforming to ASTM A 580 Type 304]. Embed wire ties a minimum of 1-1/2” into the veneer masonry wall mortar bed, with at least 5/8” mortar or grout cover to the outside face.
